Bridge-Building Competition Show ‘The Bridge’ Gets First Trailer, Premiere Date

It’s James McAvoy as you’ve never seen him before: as a wilderness expert. HBO Max has released the premiere date, key art, and trailer for its latest reality show, The Bridge. Get ready to be puzzled and oddly intrigued by this one.

The premise of this reality competition show is deceptively simple. Twelve strangers from across the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland are sent to a cabin in the middle of the British wilderness with no knowledge of what they’ll be doing. All they know is that £100,000 is on the line. What they’ll be doing is constructing a bridge. Over the course of 20 days these strangers will have to band together to construct an 850 foot bridge to reach the cash prize in the middle of an island. The catch is only one of these amateur architects will be able to walk away with the prize.

McAvoy will serve as the narrator of this new reality series. The Bridge will be executive produced by Rick Murray, Michelle Chappell, and Warren Smith. The HBO Max original will also be co-produced with Workerbee for Channel 4 in the UK.

As truly insane as this series sounds on premise alone, there’s a reason why it may be a success. The Bridge is based off the Spanish series El Puente, which ran for two seasons on the Spanish network #0. That proves it was successful somewhere in the world. And U.S. television has a good track record when it comes to adapting international reality shows into stateside hits. Technically The Masked Singer was based off an insane foreign reality show, and look how that turned out. Also, HBO Max is home to one of the most bonkers and twisted reality shows of all time, the wonderfully named Singletown.

So, yes. It does sound absolutely insane to make a show that revolves around strangers floating logs and falling in the water as they build a bridge. But reality TV has already proven that we’ll spend countless hours watching dumber shows. The Bridge premieres on HBO Max Thursday, February 11.
