‘Legacies’: Say “Hello, Brother” to an Extended Performance From Tonight’s Musical Episode

2

“Hello, brother.”

Two words that are music to the ears of any fans of The Vampire Diaries, and as of tonight’s all-singing, all-dancing episode of Legacies, will finally be put to music for “Salvatore! The Musical.” But no need to wait for episode itself, we’ve got an extended look at a musical number from the episode right here, right now.

In the hour written by Thomas Brandon, and directed by Jason Stone, the Salvatore School puts on a musical about how it was founded — including plenty of scenes and Easter eggs from throughout the franchise’s history, including TVD and The Originals.

In the scene above, “Hello, Brother,” we meet Kaleb (Chris Lee), playing the part of Damon Salvatore, originally played by Ian Somerhalder. He’s clashing, of course, with Jed (Ben Levin), who is playing Stefan Salvatore, originally played by Paul Wesley. And in the middle of this duet enters Josie Saltzman (Kaylee Bryant), playing their dual romantic interest, Elena Gilbert, originally played by Nina Dobrev.

Confused? Don’t be. The episode works well for fans of the franchise, but also, as usual with the accessible, breezy Legacies, will work for those with only passing familiarity, or for those who have only watched Legacies. Also it’s just a lot of fun.

Legacies is the literal legacy of the shows that came before it,” Executive Producers Julie Plec and Brett Matthews said via a statement provided to Decider, in a little duet of their own. “Having worked in The Vampire Diaries universe for the last decade, Julie and I were thrilled to revisit our roots along with writer Thomas Brandon. Each show in this series has been a labor of love, as is this episode, and we hope viewers will enjoy this walk down memory lane as much as we did. Feel free to sing along.”

Here’s the official synopsis of the episode, which premieres tonight at 9/8c on The CW:

The students prepare to put on a musical about the founding of the Salvatore School at the behest of their mysterious new guidance counselor. Meanwhile, as Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) throws himself into writing the musical and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), Josie (Kaylee Bryant), Kaleb (Chris Lee) and Jed (Ben Levin) dive into their roles, Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) distances herself from the musical. Jason Stone directed the episode written by Thomas Brandon (#303).
