The Mavericks are off to a disappointing start to the season, but Mark Cuban isn’t holding back in defending his biggest star.
Luka Doncic came under criticism recently, with ESPN’s Zach Lowe saying on his “Lowe Post” podcast that the All-NBA guard “has become one of the biggest whiners in the league.” That comment was relayed back to Cuban, the Mavericks owner, and he came out firing.
“I’ll tell you exactly what I think: F–k you, Zach Lowe, you don’t know s–t,” Cuban said Thursday on VICE TV’s “Cari & Jemele Won’t Stick to Sports.”
“I know Luka. He’s not a big whiner. He’s passionate. He cares, he wants to win. He’s got some s–t to him where, yeah, he’s one of those European players where you’ll see him doing this [pleading] all the time and talking in one of five different languages. But no, he’s not a whiner. He’s a baller.”
The Mavericks were 9-14 entering Friday, a rough start for a team that finished 43-32 last season and were projected to be one of the better teams in the Western Conference coming into this season.
The 21-year-old Doncic is still putting up elite numbers, averaging 27.2 points, 9.4 assists and 8.8 rebounds. While Lowe criticized him for “whining” often when he drives to the rim, he wasn’t alone in that assessment.
“Luka’s body language during games, during timeouts, it’s an issue,” said ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Lowe’s guest on the podcast. “Luka spends a lot of energy bitching at referees. … A lot of times he has a case and a lot of times it’s wasted energy and I think sucks the life out the team.”
