‘Nancy Drew’ Spinoff ‘Tom Swift’ In The Works at The CW

Welcome to the “Drew-niverse,” Tom Swift. The CW‘s Nancy Drew series may be getting a spinoff based on the Stratemeyer Syndicate “Tom Swift” book series, Deadline reports.  The new character is set to appear in an upcoming episode of Nancy Drew Season 2, with plans to build a series after.

A script for the Tom Swift pilot is already in the works, following a “Black, gay, billionaire inventor” lead, marking a departure from the white, blonde and straight character described in the series. This time, Tom “is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father.”

According to the series description, “Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hell-bent on stopping him. Tom’s missions will require his genius and flair for innovation guided by love, romance, friendship and the mysteries of the universe yet-unsolved.”

The Tom Swift series in development comes from co-creators and Nancy Drew collaborators Melinda Hsu Taylor and Noga Landau, along with Cameron Johnson of Nancy Drew production company Fake Empire. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will executive produce Tom Swift with Lis Rowinski, Johnson, Landau and Hsu Taylor.

We can expect to first see Tom Swift in the next season of Nancy Drew when he crashes into one of Nancy’s investigations. While Nancy see the event as “supernatural,” Tom has his own take, believing it to be “cosmically paranormal”.

We’ve seen Tom Swift on TV before, back in 1983 when Willie Aames and Lori Loughlin starred in The Tom Swift and Linda Craig Mystery Hour. The beloved character hasn’t graced our screens since then, but it sounds like that’s about to change.
