Sam Darnold trying to avoid his Jets ‘worst nightmare’

Sam Darnold has an aching shoulder, but he is not ready to sit down.

The Jets quarterback is still dealing with the sprained AC joint in his right shoulder he suffered on Oct. 1 against the Broncos. On Sunday, it looked like he re-injured the shoulder on a hit in the fourth quarter against the Chiefs. Everyone says he feels fine, but the Jets are sending him for an MRI and a second opinion.

It might be wise with the Jets at 0-8 to have Darnold sit and heal for a while, but the 23-year-old does not want to hear it.

“I’m focused on playing and not missing any games,” Darnold said. “I just want to play every game I’m capable of playing. If I miss a game and I’m capable of playing in it, that’s my worst nightmare and I don’t want to do that to this team.”

Darnold said he was sore on Monday but did not seem too worried. He said he is going to continue rehabbing and hopes to practice and play this week. The Jets have an extra day before their “Monday Night Football” game with the Patriots. They do not practice until Thursday.

Gase said they would not put Darnold at risk to further injure the shoulder.

“I mean Sam wants to be out there, he wants to be out there, that’s a big part of it too and that’s why we’re making sure that everybody’s aligned on this,” Gase said. “And we need him out there, he gives us the best chance to win on Sundays and he knows that. We want him to keep playing, we want to get the guys around him that we signed to get around him and hopefully we’re one step closer to getting some of these receivers back that can help us.”

The Jets are hopeful that they will get two starting wide receivers back this week and possibly have their three starters together for the first time. Breshad Perriman remains in the concussion protocol, but Gase said he is moving to the next stage and could return to practice. Jamison Crowder (groin) will be monitored this week with the hope that he can come back, too, after missing the last two weeks. … DT Quinnen Williams injured his hamstring in Sunday’s loss and could miss practice time. … C Connor McGovern injured his knee and also is in jeopardy of missing time. … The Jets will evaluate K Sam Ficken (groin) in practice to see if he can return.
