After more than 10 years, it’s finally time to say goodbye to Shameless. Showtime has announced that the eleventh and final season of the beloved comedy will premiere Sunday, December 6. Shameless Season 11 will serve as a fitting end to the story of the Gallagher family, the South Side of Chicago’s most chaotic bunch of misfits.
According to Showtime, Shameless‘ final season “finds the Gallagher family and the South Side at a crossroads, with changes caused by the COVID pandemic, gentrification, and aging to reconcile.”
“As Frank (William H. Macy) confronts his own mortality and family ties in his alcoholic and drug induced twilight years, Lip (Jeremy Allen White) struggles with the prospect of becoming the family’s new patriarch,” the official description reads. “Newlyweds Ian (Cameron Monaghan) and Mickey (Noel Fisher) are figuring out the rules and responsibilities of being in a committed relationship while Deb (Emma Kenney) embraces her individuality and single motherhood. Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) finds an unlikely new career in law enforcement and Kevin (Steve Howey) and V (Shanola Hampton) struggle to decide whether a hard life on the South Side is worth fighting for.”
While viewership has declined in recent years, Shameless remains Showtime’s No. 1 comedy and the longest-running series in network history. The network claims that Season 10, which concluded in January 2020, averaged 5.7 million weekly viewers across platforms, a figure that includes both cable and streaming customers.
Shameless has also proven immensely popular with younger viewers, many of whom likely discovered the series on streaming before tuning in on Showtime. Due to an existing deal, new seasons of Shameless typically stream on Netflix six months following the season finale (Seasons 1-10 are currently available to stream). While Showtime did not reveal how many episodes will be included in Shameless Season 11, it’s safe to expect that the final season will hit Netflix in late summer 2021.
Shameless Season 11 premieres Sunday, December 6 at 9/8c on Showtime.
