The nation’s Spanish-speaking media portray themselves as fierce advocates of equity and against gender discrimination. However, Telemundo, Univision, CNN en Español, and Estrella TV, appear to have had no interest in reporting on the executive order issued by Joe Biden on the same day he was sworn in as president of the United States, affording transgender kids the unrestricted ability to play in school sports.
A review by MRC Latino to the news of the nation’s Spanish-speaking networks as of January 20, 2020, revealed the absence of reports on the EO that transgender children “should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, dressing room or school sports.” Which now makes it easier for trans children and adults to use bathrooms, the locker room, or school sports”, and compete in unrestricted sports based on the gender with which they identify.
This means that biological males who choose to identify themselves as girls can compete in women’s teams and use the girls’ dressing room. It’s a momentous change, but the Spanish-speaking media wasn’t interested in reporting on this. Now why is that?
However, the Spanish-language media found plenty of time to report on Biden’s executive order to overturn policies from the Trump Administration; in this case, the ban on recruiting transgender people into the U.S. military. In 2016, Barack Obama allowed the recruitment of transgender citizens into the military, and ordered the military to pay for gender reassignment surgery for those who request it. President Donald Trump reversed that order, but the transsexuals already recruited into the military were allowed to remain in the armed forces.
The Spanish-language media’s exclusion of “uncomfortable” news for its audience, which for the most part holds traditional values, confirms the filter through which the news goes through; only those stories that align with their political agendas are allowed on-air. The agenda being, in this case, to project President Biden as a messiah for the Hispanic community without informing the community about the rest of his agenda.
