HBO’s Mare of Easttown follows a detective played by Kate Winslet as she tries to solve a tragic murder. Winslet’s character, Mare Sheehan, was once the golden girl of her small Pennsylvania town thanks to a game-winning shot in a basketball game. Twenty-five years later and people are still calling Mare Miss Lady Hawk, but Mare feels way more like a has-been.
Mare of Easttown is half bracing crime drama, half brilliant character drama. However it wouldn’t work nearly as well were it not for its grim, raw, realistic look at life in small town PA. The brick houses, Irish paraphernalia, and ubiquitous Wawa coffee cups place Mare of Easttown right in Delco, Pennsylvania. Bu
But where is Mare of Easttown set and where was the HBO show filmed? Here’s everything you need to know about Mare of Easttown‘s locations.
Where is HBO’s Mare of Easttown set?
Mare of Easttown is set in the Philly suburb of Delco, or Delaware County if you want to get fancy about it. The specific town Mare lives in is indeed called Easttown, though it’s more commonly known as Easttown Township in Pennsylvania. It’s an area located northwest of Philadelphia and close to Valley Forge, the King of Prussia mall, Villanova, and Conshohocken.
Inside Mare of Easttown‘s Filming Locations: Where Was the HBO Show Filmed?
Unlike other shows that try to get Toronto or Georgia to double for a place, Mare of Easttown shot on location in Delco. However, most of the filming took place in a different part of Delco. During the show’s panel at Winter 2021 TCA, writer and creator Brad Ingelsby shared that the studios were located in Aston, Pennsylvania and they started production in Sun Center.
“So all the actors were local, all the locations were within a couple miles I think…of Sun Center. Some of them we went a little bit deeper out, but for the most part, that was sort of our nucleus, Sun Center right in Aston, Delaware County, and then we kind of used that to spread out a little bit,” Inglesby said, sharing his wife is from Aston.
During that same TCA panel, Mare of Easttown director Craig Zobel said, “Delaware County and that area of Southern Philadelphia really does look very unique in its own way and we wanted to make sure we got as much of it in the frame as much as possible.”
Mare of Easttown star Kate Winslet went on to share that although she didn’t make it to the King of Prussia mall (an iconic shopping center in the Philly suburbs), she did become obsessed with local chain Wawa.
“Wawa was a big part of my life for well over a year,” Winslet said, adding that co-star Evan Peters became obsessed with the shop’s famous Gobbler sandwich.
Mare of Easttown Episode 2 will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, April 25.
