Who Plays Viola in The Haunting of Bly Manor?
The Lady in the Lake is arguably Mike Flanagan’s favorite actor. Kate Siegel plays Viola Willoughby, the former mistress of Bly Manor who comes to haunt the estate. Before her death the sick Viola packed her gowns, jewels, and finery and made her husband promise he would give them to their daughter after Viola’s death. But before her daughter was old enough Viola’s sister Perdita opened the chest. Viola’s ghost murdered her sister in a fit of rage. It’s her wrath and strong will that bound anyone who died in Bly to this haunted house.
What Else Has Kate Siegel Been In?
Siegel is best known for her collaborations with Flanagan. She’s starred in Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and Gerald’s Game. She even co-wrote the innovative and chilling Hush. But Siegel and Flanagan’s relationship goes beyond mere collaborators. They’ve been married since 2016 and have two children together.
Fans of The Haunting of Hill House likely recognize Siegel from this series’ first installment. The actor starred as Theodora “Theo” Crain in Hill House. The middle child of five, Theo was the season’s child psychologist who is sensitive to psychic energy. She wears gloves throughout the season.
What Is the Lung in Bly Manor?
Bly Manor‘s second to last episode jumps back in time and examines the death and first murders of Viola Willoughby. When Viola became sick she wasn’t given a modern diagnosis. Instead, the doctor claimed that she had “the lung.” It’s unclear exactly what that means, but it’s likely that Viola had tuberculosis. The infectious disease primarily affects the lungs and is known for its telltale symptom of a bloody cough. Tuberculosis was widespread in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Catherine Parker, also known as Katie Parker, plays Viola’s murderous sister. After Viola became sick Perdita took over running the house and raising her niece.
