Yankees’ catching situation is getting messy behind Gary Sanchez

Observations for the Yankees’ 5-1 spring training game win over the Blue Jays on Sunday.

Spring Into Action

Outfield prospect Estevan Florial made his Grapefruit League debut after arriving late to camp due to visa issues and beat out an infield single in his first at-bat.

Hit’s A Problem

As the Yankees await test results on Robinson Chironos’ hand, Kyle Higashioka’s slow start at the plate continued with three more hitless at-bats. The catcher said Saturday he’s still not feeling right offensively, but remained confident he would find his timing before Opening Day.

Caught My Eye

Ex-Met Steven Matz was in line to start against the Yankees, but he pitched a simulated game for the Blue Jays on a back field instead. Toronto right-hander Alek Manoah impressed in Matz’s place. He didn’t allow a hit in three scoreless innings and at one point fanned seven straight Yankees.

Monday’s Schedule

Domingo German looks to continue his excellent spring on the mound as the Yankees host the Phillies at 1:05 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
