Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin said Sunday he hopes the 2020 election outcome will be fair, but that there are multiple factors at play working to undermine it.
“We have so much meddling going on here,” Durbin said on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” “We have the Russians still at work, the Chinese, perhaps the Iranians and others, we certainly have conspiracy theorists in this country.”
Durbin added that disinformation spread through social media will also play a large part in the election’s outcome.
His comments come after social media giant Facebook announced that it had removed dozens of profiles, pages and groups that originated in Russia, spreading disinformation with the goal of influencing politics.
FBI Director Christopher Wray confirmed the interference testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this month, noting Russians have been using social media and “proxies, state media, online journals” to hurt Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
“We have what I consider to be corruption of the media, to think that we’re broadcasting through social media things which are truly false is really misleading the American people,” Durbin said on ABC. “We need and should have a much better approach to this. I worry about the outcome.”
